My previous career in childcare and early years together with my recent work within the Perinatal Mental Health Service has inspired a particular interest in Postnatal Depression and Birth Trauma and working with women’s issues around pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood. I believe passionately that all parents deserve as much support as possible at this time in their lives in order to take care of themselves and so in turn be able to take the best care of their babies.
Having a baby can be a wonderful, life enhancing experience, however sometimes things do not go according to plan. The demands placed on new parents can feel overwhelming, impacting hugely on their lives and relationships.
Some parents can struggle to become pregnant, with fertility issues or miscarriage causing deep anguish. Occasionally planned termination is necessary. Counselling can help parents to come to terms with these issues, explore the options and support them in making the right decisions for themselves.
Sometimes the birth experience itself can be traumatic, leaving the mother with overwhelming feelings that, if left unresolved, can go on to cause further problems. Counselling can help to resolve these feelings. By safely and slowly helping the mother to make sense of the shock and trauma, she can be helped to move on.
Some mothers have difficulty bonding with their babies, they can be left feeling numb, unable to feel any attachment or having negative feelings towards their child.
Each woman I work with brings a unique set of circumstances and experience, that is not always easy to discuss with family and friends. I offer a completely independent safe, supportive, empathic environment where we can work collaboratively together to gently explore the client’s inner world and find the best way to move forward.
